He had a grocery store on Belvedere Road called Suburban Provisions

My father, Alec Jonas, opened the first Pick n Pay with him. He started working for him when he had a grocery store on Belvedere Road called Suburban Provisions.

Jack Goldin said to my father one day “that they have something in America called supermarkets, only cash.” They opened the first store, so small it had one till inside and one on the pavement.

My folks were down and out at the time. He let us use the delivery truck on the weekends to get around. When he was away, his partner sold his car that he had said he would sell to my father.

Jack Goldin bought it back so my father could get it. He was an incredible man.
